Tapentadol

£35.99£233.98

Tapentadol is a recently discovered painkiller that is used to treat a variety of conditions where the sufferer experiences pain. It belongs to a class of medications called opioid pain medications and is often prescribed when more common painkillers have not worked. The most commonly used painkillers in the world are available over the counter, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, and are commonly known as first line medications. However, these over-the-counter medications are usually only suitable to treat mild to moderate pain, and once they do not work, doctors will tend to turn to opioids to treat more painful conditions. This medication is sold under the brand names Palexia and Nucynta among others.

Tapentadol Drug Information

Tapentadol in particular is one of the more potent opioid medications that are prescribed by doctors. In fact, it is not only more potent than paracetamol and ibuprofen, but also more potent than the second line of opioid painkiller medications, such as Tramadol and Codeine. In terms of pain relief, it is comparable to Step 3 opioids in the World Health Organisation (WHO) analgesic ladder, which was a strategy proposed in 1986 to provide adequate pain relief for cancer patients, but now is applicable to many non-cancer related conditions where chronic pain is a factor. The opioids that belong to Step 3 of the analgesic ladder are medications such as Oxycodone, Morphine and Methadone.

What is Tapentadol Used For?

Tapentadol is used for a number of different conditions where pain is moderate to severe and works to reduce the severity of the pain to a manageable level. As there are two types, the usual version and the Extended-Release version, there are different conditions which each medication is used to treat. The Immediate Release Tapentadol, is used to treat acute pain which begins suddenly, is due to a specific cause, and goes away when the underlying issue is cured.

Tapentadol Extended Release is used to treat chronic pain, which is constant, and uncontrollable by other medications. The slow release of the medication ensures that the constant pain is always repressed. One of the main uses for the Extended-Release version is neuropathic pain.

Neuropathic pain is defined as pain deriving from a disease which affects the somatosensory system. This results in damage to the nerves in the nervous system and can result from a large range of potential causes. It can affect people in different ways, and to different severities, with some people feeling a tingling sensation, whereas others may describe it as a stabbing sensation. Tapentadol Extended Release would usually be prescribed for someone who was experiencing a severe amount of chronic neuropathic pain. Some of the conditions that it may be prescribed for are:

  • Multiple sclerosis – This condition can result in neuropathic pain in the sufferer, with some estimates being that around 28% of people with multiple sclerosis experience it. This results from damage to the protective coating on the nerve fibres which creates a lesion, resulting in unpleasant sensations.
  • Diabetes-related neuropathic pain – Tapentadol pills can be prescribed for people who suffer from nerve pain relating to diabetes. It is thought that the high blood sugar in people with diabetes can cause the nerves to be damaged. It is estimated that between 30-50% of people who suffer from diabetes experience this type of neuropathic pain.

How Does Tapentadol Work?

Like other opioid medications, Tapentadol works by changing the way the central nervous system, which is essentially the brain and the spinal cord, is affected by pain. It does this by working directly on the opioid receptors in the central nervous system, by binding to them, which in turn reduces the feeling of pain. When we experience something that might be painful, signals are sent from our peripheral nervous system to our central nervous system, to let us know that the experience is painful. This is something that has been beneficial in our evolution, as it ensures that when we experience physical trauma, the pain lets us know that what we are experiencing is hurting us. However, sometimes pain can be too much to bear, or is present regardless of whether there is any external factor causing us pain or not, such as with neuropathic pain. That is why people buy Tapentadol, which reduces the pain signals from being received by the central nervous system, therefore decreasing the feeling of pain.

How Long Does Tapentadol Last?

Tapentadol effects for the Immediate Release version usually last for between 4 to 6 hours after consumption and start to work after half an hour. The half life of this medication is around 3.93 hours. The half-life is defined as how long it takes after consumption for half of the medication to leave the body. This however is dependent on different factors, which can affect how quickly we process medication. Some of these factors are:

  • Dosage – the higher the dose of Tapentadol that you take, the longer it will take to leave the body.
  • Other medications – certain medications can delay how long it takes for Tapentadol Tablets to be processed.
  • Weight – if you are on the heavier side, it is likely that this medication will take longer to be processed than if you were within a ‘normal’ weight range.

The Extended-Release version of this medication lasts for around 12 hours, so should be taken every 12 hours to maintain a constant level of pain reduction.

Tapentadol stays in different parts of the body for different lengths of time. If urine is tested, this medication will be present for 3 to 4 days after the last dose. For blood, it should be present for no longer than a day, whereas for hair, it can last for up to 90 days.

Tapentadol Dosage Guide

Tapentadol should be taken with a glass of water and swallowed whole. It can be taken with or without food, as this does not affect the mechanism of action. If prescribed by a doctor, they will generally start you on a lower Tapentadol dose and increase it if needed. After a while, you may develop a tolerance towards this medication. If this occurs, you may need to increase the dose to be able to keep your pain under control. Alternatively, it may be better to change the medication that you are taking, so that the tolerance levels do not increase further.

In relation to the Tapentadol dosage, this is different for Immediate Release and Extended-Release tablets.

For Immediate Release, the starting dose is 50mg every 4-6 hours, as needed when pain is felt. If needed, a further 50mg can be taken 1 hour after the initial dose. A maximum of 700mg can be taken in the first 24 hours, and a maximum of 600mg can be taken daily following that.

For Extended Release, initially 50mg can be taken every 12 hours, which can be increased if needed. A maximum of 500mg can be taken per day.

Tapentadol Side Effects

Although this is an opioid medication, and all opioid medications have side effects, Tapentadol side effects are particularly mild in comparison to other Step Three opioids such as morphine and oxycodone. Please note that the following is not a full list of side effects, and you should do your own research into the side effects of this medication before you buy Tapentadol online. Some of the more common side effects that can occur are:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Stomach Pain

If you start to experience the following effects, you may be having an allergic reaction to this medication. In this scenario, you should seek immediate medical attention. These symptoms are:

  • Hives
  • Chest pain
  • Fast heart rate
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the face and tongue

It is important that you do not drink alcohol while taking this medication, as it may increase the risk of side effects.

Tapentadol vs Oxycodone

When trying to judge whether a medication is suitable for them, or whether they should choose one above another, they will often ask us for a direct comparison. Here we will look at Tapentadol vs Oxycodone. Firstly, these two medications are both opioid medications that are used to treat moderate to severe pain. However, one major difference is that Tapentadol has a much lower incidence of side effects than Oxycodone. In fact, studies have shown that significantly fewer treatments were discontinued as a result of gastrointestinal related side effects, such as vomiting and constipation, when compared to an equivalent dosage of Oxycodone. This is because Tapentadol works via a dual mechanism, by activating opioid receptors and inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine. So, if you are currently taking Oxycodone for your pain and seem to experience difficult side effects, it seems like a wise choice to switch and buy Tapentadol in the UK instead.

Is Tapentadol Safe for Everyone?

As previously mentioned, this medication is similar to other effective opioids, but with fewer side effects. In general, most people will be able to take Tapentadol and be fine. There are some people who should not take this medication however, these are:

  • if you have a hypersensitivity to this medication, or an allergy to it.
  • if you suffer from conditions with symptoms of significant respiratory depression, such as severe asthma, bronchitis, or pneumonia.
  • if you suffer from or are suspected to suffer from paralytic ileus (impaired motor activity of the bowel)
  • if you suffer from addiction issues relating to alcohol, drugs, or other substance abuse.

Regardless of whether you belong to the above groups, you should always check with your doctor before starting a new course of any medication that you have not taken before, for example before you buy Tapentadol online. This is to ensure that this medication does not interfere with any medications that you already taking. In addition, the above list is not extensive, and you may belong to a group of people who are not suitable to take this medication due to medical conditions that you suffer from.

Additionally, this medication may have an influence on your ability to drive and use machines, due to how it affects the central nervous system functions. This must be monitored during the start of treatment, and dosage adjusted by a doctor if needed.

Before You Buy Tapentadol Online

Before you buy Tapentadol, there are alternative methods that you can use to try to treat pain without the need to take medication. A combination of studies and anecdotal evidence have found the following to be effective:

  • Cold and heat – usually this comes in the form of either an ice pack (a pack of frozen peas will do) or a heat pad. Either of these are tried and tested methods of reducing pain.
  • Exercise – studies have shown that regular exercise of at least 30 minutes every day can help to relieve pain by releasing endorphins. Of course, the appropriate form of exercise should be done, if you mainly suffer from shoulder pain, do not attempt to perform press ups or weightlifting. Generally gentle aerobic exercise such as swimming is recommended, as the water supports the body whilst you are exercising.
  • Physical therapy – this not only helps to relieve pain, but it also increases strength and flexibility and prevents injuries from reoccurring.
